Ph.D. Candidate
A Ph.D. degree is the highest academic qualification and it is internationally recognized. It is awarded after a course of study of three years with a full time workload. It provides the necessary competences to work in research in public or private institutions, thus contributing to the realization of the European Higher Education Area and the European Research Area.

Research fellow
A research fellow (Assegnista di ricerca) is a PhD holder or a graduate with a suitable scientific and professional background who is able to work in research to support the activities of the Departments. There are various types of assegno di ricerca such as professionalizing, postdoc or senior research fellowships.

Researcher
Permanent researcher positions have been abolished in Italy in 2011. Since that date, Italian universities hire fixed-term researchers who work in research, teaching, co-teaching and services to students.
There are two types of postdoc research contracts:
- RTD - three years with a possible 2-year extension (non-permanent researchers as provided for by lettera a), comma 3, articolo 24 of Italian law no. 240/2010).
- RTD «tenure track» - three years with the possibility to become an associate professor if the researcher obtains the National Scientific Qualification (non-permanent researchers as provided for by lettera b), comma 3, articolo 24 of Italian Law no. 240/2010).

Associate professor
It is the entry-level tenured academic position within Italian universities. Associate professors are recruited through a comparative selection process at local level.
The selection process to recruit associate professors aims to verify a good level of quality and originality of research results and a recognized position in research at least at national level. Other evaluation criteria are the proven capability to coordinate or direct a research group and the ability to attract competitive funds at least as responsible of a local unit and the capacity to promote technology transfer.

Full Professor
It is the highest tenured academic position within Italian universities. Full professors are recruited through a comparative selection process at local level.
The selection process to recruit full professors aims to verify a high level of quality and originality of research results and a recognized position in research at international level. Other evaluation criteria are the proven capability to coordinate or direct a research group – including international collaborations - , experience as Ph.D. supervisor, the ability to attract competitive funds as project Coordinator of international scientific projects and the capacity to promote technology transfer.
